The Yarraboldy Briquette Company, located at Rockhampton, in Central Qld, was originally a Clay Brick Manufacturing company, and began in 1928. In 2003 Sunbrix Australia Pty Ltd was formed to handle the production and marketing of the retail briquettes produced by the factory in Rockhampton QLD.

The Yarraboldy Briquette Company now was producing briquettes from waste coal fines to be used for power generation and working with Biomass products for use as a "Green" energy source in Australia. For more information about Yarraboldy please go to our page " Yarraboldy Briquetting Projects".

Following the Gulf Oil crisis in 1978, which forced up the price of oil, the company converted its brick firing kilns from oil to coal.

This created some problems with smoke and odour emissions, which the company began to address. This led to the development of a binder which enabled briquettes to be made from anthracite coal fines and the production of a smokeless and odourless fuel suitable for heating and cooking purposes.

This product is different from most solid fuels in that there is no pollution caused by its production - it is simply fine black coal mixed with organic binder and it cures naturally. There is NO heating process or production of concentrated smoke in one area to produce a clean burning product, as is the case with other fuels.

In 1992, the Federal Australian Government recognised the environmental excellence of the ‘Sunbrix’ product and showcased it as Australia’s contribution to a cleaner world at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

As a heating fuel, anthracite, (from which it is manufactured) is recognised as the ultimate in coals. It is the cleanest burning and highest ranking of all coals and when tested by CSIRO was shown to burn for up to eight times longer than seasoned hardwood. ‘Sunbrix’ heating fuel can be purchased in Bunnings, selected BBQ's Galore stores and various other retail outlets on the East Coast of Australia. Sunbrix is also available in Bunnings in SA and WA.

As an alternative to charcoal it is harder to light, burns for much longer, and if accepted by end users, has the potential to save vast tracts of old growth forests which are currently under threat or actually being logged to provide a source of heat for cooking.

It must be understood that charcoal, as a source of heat for cooking, is preferred because charcoal grilled food is well recognised for its taste, which (according to JDFDA - Japan) can be attributed to charcoal’s far infra-red rays, emitted by the burning charcoal which penetrates into the food and cooks it evenly without burning the surface, resulting in a world-wide preference for charcoal grilled steaks and hamburgers. Gas and electricity do not have this far infra-red ray attribute, whereas coal does.

In Australia, if used as an alternative to other BBQ fuels it has the potential to reduce pollution caused in their production.

Sunbrix Australia Pty Ltd, as the manufacturer of ‘Sunbrix’ therefore understands the desire of people to use charcoal, which unfortunately leads to the mass destruction of forests, and is proud to be the innovator behind such a globally-responsible product.

The testimonial below is from the Executive Chef at Monarch Lee Gardens Hotel in Bangkok. This the same Hotel which appears on the reverse of the ‘Sunbrix’ brochure.

“I’m very happy to have found the Sunbrix Briquette from Australia for our Charcoal
Grill at Palais de Monarch Restaurant, 37th Floor.

The Sunbrix Coal Briquette produces no smoke, odour or sparks once lighted.
Meats, seafood or vegetables keep the natural flavours and have no bitter taste once
grilled and Sunbrix coal guarantees a healthy grilled product where as with any local
produced Charcoal you have dangerous smoke particle produced through smoke and
sparks on the grilled goods which is hazards of health.

As the Understanding Host we at the Monarch Lee Gardens care for our guests’ health."
