An Australian company has produced an environmentally responsible coal briquette from anthracite coal fines which have a burning time 8 times that of seasoned hardwood and burn without smoke or odour.
Sunbrix Australia Pty Ltd not only has C.S.I.R.O. tests to prove their claims, but have also accreditation from the British Government to market the product into smoke control areas of the U.K. and believes it is the first Company outside the EEC to receive this accreditation. Former Federal Primary Industries Minister, Mr. Crean, said the "Sunbrix" project was near perfect. "It shows Australia can develop new technology to assist in the more efficient, cleaner use of our coal worldwide. It is a value-adding project, environmentally friendly and very much part of the clever country approach", he said. Then Federal Environmental Minister, Ros Kelly, showcased the "Sunbrix" briquette at the earth summit in Rio de Janeiro. "Sunbrix" briquettes are suitable for braziers, most slow combustion stoves and heaters with an air flow through the grate, and also for open fire places. As anthracite coal contains no tar or creosotes, when "Sunbrix" are burning in a glass front wood burner, they do not discolour the glass door and an added advantage over burning wood in this type of appliance is that there is no build up of soot in the chimney, however, if a grate is used to allow for air flow under the fire bed, the combustion will be more efficient. "Sunbrix" have found a ready market in open air Restaurants and Hotel Beer Gardens where they are burnt in braziers to create an atmosphere which attracts and retains customers. The Brisbane Southbank last year consumed over 100 tons of "Sunbrix" Heating Briquettes for this purpose with some Hoteliers and Restaurateurs reporting a remarkable increase in custom. "Sunbrix" Briquettes are becoming increasingly popular with Hire Companies for use in Garden Parties, Outdoor Weddings and Racing Carnivals. "Sunbrix" Briquettes are exported to New Zealand, where they arc marked under the "Carbonate" banner by Waikato Coal Supplies who report a "Brazier Craze" sweeping the North Island this year as Al Fresco dining around a brazier on cooler evenings has become very trendy. One brazier restaurant owner commented that, "mankind's primary attraction to the flickering flame is certainly alive & well!" One of the most pleasing aspects of using "Sunbrix" is that once the fire is established, it will throw out an even heat all evening (up to 15 hours or even longer, in some cases) eliminating the problems associated with re-fueling a brazier amidst patrons and the associated problem of dust, inconvenience and varying levels of warmth.
